Burns, Alexander Sillars

Alexander Sillars Burns RSW (1911-1987) was a Scottish painter, born in Newmilns, Ayrshire and known as Alastair Burns. 


Mainly a landscapist he worked on the Isles of Skye, Arran and in France. He attended Gray's School of Art 1929-33, studying under D M Sutherland. Assisted by winning a travelling scholarship, he furthered his studies in Paris and on his return in 1937 he was involved in the restoration of the heraldic wall panels at Monymusk House in Aberdeenshire. He was elected RSW in 1957 and frequently showed there and with the AAS, GI and RSA. Burns was a member of Society of Scottish Artists and his work is represented in the collections of Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, Aberdeen Art Gallery, Paisley Art Gallery, Newport Art Gallery, Gwent and the GAC.
