Danby, James Francis
James Francis Danby, an English landscape artist, son of Francis Danby A.R.A., was born at Bristol in 1816. His works appeared at the Royal Academy from 1842 until his death from apoplexy in 1875. He also exhibited at the Society of British Artists, of which he was a member, and occasionally at the Royal Hibernian Academy
His dramatic landscapes, especially sunsets show the strong influence of his father and he must have visited Ireland, his father’s homeland, as several of his paintings are of Irish landscapes. He must also have visited Scotland as one of his paintings is titled Isle of Arran which is a view of Arran from the sea. This painting is in the Astley Cheetham Art Collection in Stalybridge near Manchester.
